Day 148

I am leaving for holiday tomorrow to visit my friend Fifi in Oman and I am so excited! The holiday will be wonderful and when I get back we will hopefully be able to move into the new clinic and start working. I think I am due for a holiday since my daily functioning is not working so well. Today, for example I was carrying three bottles of medication to a clinic and when I got out of the car I dropped one, bent down to pick it up and dropped the second one, bent down to pick that one up and tripped over my skirt. Life has a funny way of telling you to take a rest.
This afternoon I was then in another training session for peer educators informing them about the process of HIV and how it invades the body and one teenager asked me, 'Are you married? I mean are you single?' This seems to be an important question in these sessions and I asked him, 'Are you asking me if I have a small house?' Everyone laughed at that. In Zimbabwe a small house can be anything from your boyfriend to your second husband, to the person you are having an affair with. It somes from prior times when men had wives but could afford to also have second women on the side in the smaller house. I neglected to mention that for the time being I do not even have a tent let alone an actual small house.

Things at work have been a bit slow lately with doing planning and not actually implementing anything, but I realize that it is just how Zimbabwe moves. The snails pace at times and you have to adjust to it.
A big change here has been with the currency. Last week a new bearer check was implemented which cut off the last three zeros in all the currency. So, a 100,000 note is now 1,000. It is strange to see so many changes in currency and to realize the economic instability of a country. The new currency ranges from a 1 cent check to 100,000. It just does not seem possible, but it is happening and people are coping. The resilience of the people of Zimbabwe consistently amazes me.

I love you all and miss you! I will write when I get back on the 20th.
